Tips for Breeding Mice?

I started off my colony with one male and one female and added one female a week until I had four females. My little guy had obviously gotten them all pregnant but he was too smelly to keep (parents complained) so I returned him to the store to find a new home. The first female had a few babies (not sure exactly how many, 3-6?). But had eaten them all by the third day! The others never had litters so I assume they were re-absorbed.

Is there anything I can do to help promote them keeping their litters? They live in a 10 gal aquarium with lots of fun things to climb on and hide in. They have a wheel for running and a large water bottle with vitamins. I give them cat treats as a protein treat. They are in the same room as my 4 snakes and my 2 gerbils. Occasionally the cat comes in to watch the gerbils. Do you think the other animals are causing a problem? I try and handle the mice regularly so they don't mind people, but I don't know how successful other animal introductions would be... In other news my gerbils shod have babies next month. I don't want to use my gerbils as snake food ~__~!!
