I think you may have hit the nail on the head above. It sounds like a firefox issue, since you can log in with IE. Something with the chat is not compatible with firefox.
That said, I can't help you, as I don't know about Firefox. I'm an IE user. Hopefully someone using FF can let you know what they had to do.
