I like the lens. I use it mainly for photographing butterflies/dragonflies so that I don't have to sneak up so close to them and scare them away. It gets a pretty good DOF. The only thing it doesn't have is Image Stabilization which if you have the money is really the way to go. But if you have a tripod, the Sigma lens works just fine. I have practiced with it enough that most of the time I am ok without the tripod now too.
