Frustrating uncooperative male

My female shed and I put the male in with her. She was interested; he did nothing. (This is the first attempt for both of them and me). He started to milk over a couple of days after the unsuccessful breeding attempt. My guess is that he wasn't feeling up to it even though he wasn't showing signs of being in shed yet at the time. The current plan is wait for him to shed and try again. Any other suggestions?
