My girls laid 4 beautiful clutches this year and I was thrilled and overwhelmed! Two clutches that were laid a day apart finished hatching about 2 weeks ago. One clutch had 5 dead in the eggs and one severely deformed hatchling. I have a whole bunch from that clutch that have short tails (not genetic - neither parent has them and none of last years babies had them) and many with minimal to minor kinks. The other clutch hatched out 18/18 wonderful beautiful healthy babies. One might have a minimal kink. My third clutch which was laid 10 days after the others is just starting to hatch. I believe I have two stunning caramel motleys, not sure since I have never hatched one! One of them is this wonderful motley stripe! I am devastated because she has some small kinks in her back. All these clutches were affected by a heat spike.
I find myself choking on the thought of culling so many babies. I will do it if need be but I wanted some opinions.
Some of the kinks are barely felt "bumps" in the spine. Is there a chance that they can "grow out of these"? What are people's opinions about selling/breeding a snake with a tiny bump.
Since I am pretty sure that these abnormalities are from incubation issues why shouldn't these snakes produce normal babies? After all their genetics are ok and that is what is passed on.
I'm looking for discussion here. I am ultimately probably going to cull these hatchlings. I will post some photos but probably can't get to it until tomorrow or the weekend.
