My son's snake Markey was prescribed Baytril an oral antibiotic this past Monday for a possible upper respiratory infection. I am supposed to give it to her for fourteen days.
The vet clinic called today to do a follow up on Markey. I asked a few questions about things that I learned here and on another corn snake site. I was then directed to contact another reptile clinic as the vet I saw is now on vacation for two weeks.
I decided to call the other clinic. They were shocked to hear that Markey is on oral antibiotics. The lady told me that they always do injections and that they never prescrible oral antibiotics for snakes. I explained that the vet I saw said the injections cause abcesses. I did not want to play the he said she said game and didn't want anyone to feel like I was going to go to the vet and tell them what they did wrong so I simply told the lady that I was confused and that I just wanted Markey to get better. The lady said the oral meds "might" work. Uhhhh they MIGHT work??? I just cannot get those words out of my head. I've done so much in the past week to get Markey better. It's not easy giving a four plus foot snake oral meds either. Markey has been a trooper though.
I also told the lady what the vet said about keeping Markey's tank at 78-80 degrees. I told her that I was told on some forums to keep the temps in the mid to upper 80's on the warm side and at 80 degrees on the cool side. She agreed and said the norm is five degrees higher than the usual temps.
She also felt that I should not be soaking Markey daily for two weeks.....
Anyway, I think if I will take Markey back to the vet for a follow up after she is finished with the meds and I think I will take her to the second vet. It just seems like the first lady (has 15 years snake experience) did not really know what she was talking about. I cannot afford to have Markey get worse......that would be very upsetting.
