Ruby is laying as I type. So far 3 great looking eggies.
The reason I ask for well wishes, is that last season, with Ruby's previous owner, she became eggbound The eggs had to be aspirated in order for her to pass them.
This morning when I checked on her, she had 3 eggies...when I went back to snag a couple pics she had #4 and 5 as I watched. Now I will be leaving her alone to do her business in peace. I'll check on her after dinner.
The process of egg laying:
Thanks for looking. Wish me luck with this one. Last season, she became eggbound and the eggs had to be aspirated before she could pass them. ( previous owner) This season, I had exercised her quite regularly, and paired her with a different, younger male, in hopes that we avoid the eggbinding. If she happens to become eggbound again, she will be given a year off and possibly retired as a breeder. She's a 2002, weighing in at close to 700gr. So size and age are not a reason for the eggbinding issues last year. I'm hoping it was just a muscle tone issue, which I worked at rectifying for this season.
Dear Ruby....Congratulations. You're doing a great job! Now about that crazy lady, you know, the one who thinks taking pictures of you is fun while you are earnestly trying to expel those pearly whites, she's just worried. I know you will do just fine...you and Mother Nature have this whole proceedure down pat.
Christina...patience my dear. Stop lifting that lid to check...
Again...congrats! I can feel your excitement all the way up here in the north!
Awesome, AWESOME egg laying photos........thanks for sharing the progression pics of the process. Looks like the luck that you wished for worked. Keep us informed of the remaining.

And the result.....23 pearly whites.... no apparant slugs
I'm fairly certain she's done, but I'm not picking her up untill tommorrow. Then I'll check and see if she retained any. But from what I could see, I don't think so
Just a little update. Ruby ate an adult mouse on the 21st, and is entering shed now. I weighed her and she was at 499gr. down from 700gr pre-gravid. Once she shed's, we'll work on getting her back up to weight. I am not rebreeding her this season, if she doubles it will be her own doing, but based on her hardships last year, I don't think I want to chance fate.
I did lose one egg within the first few days. Still, 22 babies is a handful, so I really don't mind.
