I still can't get over this guy. He is wonderful. No signs of aggressiveness, even in shed. Although sometimes he looks at me like I'm a dunce... well maybe I am.
Ramses is Ruth's caramel boy, so I'm not sure how old he is. But he is a PRO breeder for sure. I have never experienced before, what I have with him. Ummm, that sounds really bad, let me explain.
Ramses can tell immediately whether a female is "ready" or not. To some this may not seem so amazing, but, with my last 2yrs breedings it is. My males tend to just maul the female whether she is "ready" or not, untill she mates. Ramses, if you put him in with a not ready female, he doesn't twitch, doesn't hardly touch her, and just goes about his own way.
Now, if you put him in with a "ready" female, instantainously, he will twitch and raise his tail, and pursue her. But not in an aggressive manner.
I put him in with my Amber, and there was nothing. Not the smallest twitch. NADA.
I put him in with my amel, BOOM, twitch city. Within a minute, he had penetrated her. Done. He's good.
Maybe it's just my males being less experienced than Ramses, which causes them to be all manly just in the presence of a female, irregardless of whether they are willing/ready to mate.
This boy is going to be hard to let go of He is so docile, almost attention seeking as well.
He eats funny too.
My first time feeding him, I put a FT adult mouse in with him. Took him a little bit, but he grabbed it and started eating ( no constricting ).... he had it half way down and literally spit it out ???? Not sure why, possibly positioning. When he dropped it, it landed in the aspen, so it was covered in it. I reached in ( I know, not smart ) to grab it as he was going towards it again. I didn't want him eating all the aspen, so I washed it off, went back to him... he was in the same position, I would say he was waiting. I moved the newspaper, plopped the mouse down in front of him, and he ate it. It was just weird, the spitting out part.... as well as being able to reach in and take the prey from him.
Anyways, can you tell I'm on a codeine enhanced stupor yet? LOL.
I just love this pic, Ramses and my hypo motley female ( who is not in the mood btw)
I figured I should try to snag some pics of Ruth's baby, before he goes back home, as well as to show his Momma what he spends his time doing here. He's a charmer for sure. Thanks again Ruth
Nice looking pair! Congrats. I look forward to pictures of their little ones. Ramses is a nice looking boy, and it sounds like he's a sweetheart too. I can see why it'd be hard to see him leave.
Great pic of him Christine, and I'm so thankful he has lived up to his 'obligations'. Yup, he's one spoiled corn and one of the best investments I ever made...actually my first... .
I've never looked back with this boy. He has proved not only to be an excellent breeder, but as my mystery snake, he's been so much fun to work with genetically. I didn't receive much info when I purchased him from a private collector. The couple had purchased him as a hatchling from Glades Herps in 2001, so he was 2 years old when I stumbled onto this rare find here in Canada. I can't take all the credit for his "Gentle Ben" temperment; he came to me that way, but of course, because he already seemed to have his 'people skills', he became the favorite here very quickly. Those were the days when 5 corns seemed like a large collection to me...
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he'll eventually let you know that Amber is ready. Do I see a Ramses Jr. somewhere on your holdback list? In the 3 years he has sired clutches for me, his progeny have always been the easiest hatchlings to start feeding and the least flighty.
Once again, he's done me proud. Thanks for posting this thread and his pic...sounds like he's slithered his way into your heart, just as he did mine.
