Our "Winnie" & "Bullwinkle"

Jeff and I put in a woodstove last fall to help with keeping the hydro bills under control. Isolated towns such as Manitouwadge just don't have the luxury of natural gas heating. After spending lots of dollars for wood, we decided to do the natural thing and scavenge for our own.

A yearly permit can be purchased for $30.00 thru the Ministry of Natural Resources and for this permit you also receive a map of logged out areas from the previous year. There you are able to scavenge pine, birch, popular and cedar from huge piles that the logging companies consider scrap.

We've found the ideal location and every other day or so go out in our van, sometimes with the trailer and do a 'wood run' or two. We've had several sightings of bear and moose in the area, and some of these critters just have to investigate to see what us 'two footed' creatures are doing.

This is Northern Nature at it's finest. Who would have ever thought this 'citified' grandma would ever get so excited over visits from "Winnies" and "Bullwinkles" as she scavenges for wood? How I love spring in the wilds of Northern Ontario.

Here's some pics of last weeks visits...and yes, that last pic did have me scrambling for the inside of the van...

Those are cool........thanks for sharing them. It kind of reminds me of the mountains and wildlife around Ruidoso, New Mexico before we moved to Texas.......would just have to replace the moose with an elk. Looks like she has been waiting for spring, and things to green up a bit.....got a few ribs showing. LOL

Would be awesome to live in/around country like that. Thanks again for sharing.
