Unread Post count......

Hey Caroline, below is what I was talking to you about and thank you summoning the troops to help me remember how to "print screen". LOL

For any others that might be able to help me in this situation, the following images pretty much describe the problem. It happens to be on a count of "1" right now but it fluctuates on it's own.......whenever it feels the need to change I guess. It has been up to as much as "5" before and gets very confusing. I had thought that maybe the system was counting new posts in some of the threads that I have set to "ignore", but when I go look at those particular threads nothing new has been added anytime recently (nothing in bold). I had thought that quiting my browser and opening up a new one had fixed it before but, alas, I am wrong again.

As a matter of fact, I was up to "5" late this afternoon and tried another option that I thought would work. I have my username/password set to automatically log me in when I come to the site so I manually logged out and then re-logged back in. It worked. It was reset to "0" and there were actually "0" Unread Posts...........until less than an hour later, we are starting back on the problem again.

It's not that big of a deal I guess........I just don't want to think I am missing anything. Maybe you guys have ganged up and started a thread ABOUT me.

Thanks for any/all help that may be provided.

Actually Galen, I have a similar problem. When I get on and check for new posts, I get a notice saying that there are 10 new posts, but only 4 or 5 will show up when I click on that link. I try and keep the everything read after I have gone through the ones that I want to during the day, but I still get this issue. Never really thought anything about it till I saw that you are having the same problem.

Is it showing links to threads when you click that link? If so, that could be because there are 10 new posts spread out over 4 or 5 threads.

I understand what you are saying about that.......when it first started happening I had thought maybe I was wrong. As when it shows "4" new posts, there may only be 2 threads with 2 posts in each. The situation I am referring to though is when the count in Unread Posts shows a true number, but are actually not there when clicking on it.....everything has already been read due to the notice I get.

Once again, no biggie. Just curious as if to there was a setting that needed adjusted or if it is just a small bug in the system.

Go down to the very bottom of the main index of the forum and hit the Mark Forums Read link (or click that one). It should reset the number to 0, maybe it'll fix something in whatever cookie handles your read/unread posts.

Thanks Carlos........I had done that awhile back and it did seem to work for a bit, but had forgotten about it. Will try that right now.

Not sure if this is related in any way, but ...

When I logout, I get a message page saying there was an error when I tried to log. It gives me another link to click to complete the process. That works for me. Before I realized the second link was a complete logout, I came back to find less than 50 new posts after 24 hours. (Like that's realistic for this forum! )

Having to click two links to get completely out is such a minor annoyance, it never occurred to me to say anything about it. (Mostly because I have much more major annoyances in my life on a regular basis. )

I have noticed that as well: the error after the first log-out attempt. I think there just may be a few bugs in the system or something..............but, it sure doesn't hinder enjoying the site in any way.

Has there been anything else heard about this? The last two days it's been happening to me quite a bit. I've cleared all of my cookies and the cache I've logged out and logged back in, and it's still giving me different counts. I clear the unread posts each time I exit the site so I'm able to track those I've viewed and those I haven't.

Here's a screen shot:

Now, I can accept that sometimes some of the new posts are all in the same thread, but until yesterday or the day before there was never more then a 2 or 3 post difference. This morning, there were over 200 new posts when I first arrived and only around 30-35 of them showed up when I clicked the link to view them. So, it seems there's something more going on. I wish I'd have thought of taking a screen shot the first time - but figured it was the cookies or cache and well that didn't work or help.

For the record I'm using Firefox (the very latest version) and am on XP - don't know if knowing that'll make a difference.

Thanks, Jenn

Jenn, I think I sort of figured out what's going on with your question. The "Unread Posts" is the individual posts. The number in the download-message is the number of threads the server tosses up with all the unread posts in them.

Was that coherent? or do I need more cough syrup?
