No, they are both sodas. Rootbeer is not a "cola". Rootbeers are flavored by birch bark, vanilla bean, sarsaparilla, ginger and licorice. Colas are flavored by kola nuts, citrus, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla. They are distinctly different in color, flavour and ingredients.
ok, I guess your choice is still "cola" for anery rootbeers.
well, we seem to have a consensus moving in that direction. we will have to see how things progress.
I guess my "definition" of cola, soft drink, rootbeer, carbinated beverage wasn't dead on, It was a generalization like the habit of people calling any soft drink or cola, Coke. They still look the same color to me. A carbinated brown liquid in a comercialized container sold to the public as a thirst quencher and chick magnet...It alwasy makes me laugh how drinking a certain soft drink will make you instantly popular with the opposite sex.
anyway, pour a glass of Coke and pour a glass of Barqs...I just don't think they will look very different.
I don't have any rootbeer here to do a photo comparison but when I get out later this afternoon I just might have to pick up a bottle.
It will be interesting to compare.
I just might have to get some Amber Bach while Im out as well.
Might as well do as much research as possible...LOL

Interesting - never knew that - no wonder rootbeer tastes like desert- lots of yummy stuff in there!! The word 'soda' is one that I almost never hear in western Canada - but seems a common term when we visit the US - most of the time these fizzy drinks are called 'pop' around here.
I am still in favor of the beer names though - would love to try that Amber Bach - my kind of research!!

Thank you everyone for your responses. I had so many thoughts about everyones posts and started to respond to them - with some pretty wits comments (I thought :-D) and I was called away. When I finished, I was outside the time limit and lost my post. :-(.
It seems that the naming conventions for creams isn't standard yet. It will be interesting to see what happens.
I'll keep you all posted with the developments!
for beautiful creams!

I have some rootbeers that look very Miamish.. Humm.. What to call them.. Raspberry swirl has been taken, and well snowsicles has been used.. I think I might have to encourage the Latino side and just call La Fuentes, after the Cigars.. *snickers* Of course Pico or Salsa came to mind..
*ducks, runs and hides..*

You might be onto something there. I'd need a pic to be sure.
Since I've started studing Spanish and you want to "encourge the Latino side" how about "Fumar" for the roots and "Fuego" for the creams.
ok, gotta get back the books. Viva la Espanol. Adios!

Me too, I end up sitting on the porch to have a fumar.. I need to get some better picture of the rootbeers we produced this year..
November 1 will be four years since I quit smoking. Went from nearly four packs a day to zero, overnight. When the doctor's use sentences containing, "chronic obstructive pulmonary disease", it's time to rethink your habits. I spend all the money I used to spend on smokes either on snakes or on eBay.
