Now follows some 'shots' of the 1.2 Granite 'Keepers' from 2005.
These 'guys' were chosen for their obvious differences. Which would you say were the females?
Ist - Granite
This may be considered the 'standard' colouration that one may expect from the Granite cultivar.
Although I was not overly keen on this babe, whilst a hatchling, the colour is becoming more & more appealing as the animal matures.
Next - Granite
Beautiful pale pinks & very defined silver grey background colour.
Next - Granite
Another pale example which I find very attractive. The background is a stronger gunmetal grey.
Now, these sub-adult colours could be a simple case of selective breeding. Both Mama & Papa are quite a stunning pair themselves.
The lineage goes back to 'Orion' (or, indeed, his brother - another story).
Of the two brothers (Imported 1997), one male matured into a much larger individual. This difference seems to be passed onto the progeny as the dark female is a mere 330 gram whilst her sis. is 415 gram.
Obviously, feeding has influenced the growth rate of the pale female. However, her desire to be up-graded onto larger food items did proceed at an earlier stage.
Yes, it could just be an individual 'thing'. But, the history is being repeated with a couple of Pewter males (keepers 2006), one larger even although the feeding schedule is the same.
The point being. I am considering mating the pale female this year, against my normal rule of waiting until 3 years of maturity (+ the appropriate weight of over 400 grams).
I must admit I do like the paler indivuals myself.
Arjan your little Grantite boy is lovely...with a great appetite...a trend in Lex's snakes I think hehe
