Hello, I am new here : ) I found this site while looking for some information on NutriBac for my little corn who can't keep down his meals.
But I live in Truckee, California and I snowboard a lot. (Yes it does snow in Califonia) I have one Husky doggie names Haley, two betta fish, and my little Anery Corn Ziggy. Anche, parlo italiano perche sono nata in Sicilia e l'ho abitata per otto anni. **Also, I speak Italian because I was born in Sicily, and I lived there for eight years**
My first snake was a little anery corn, named Ophelia. Good luck with your little one. If you do a search, there is a ton of information for regurging baby corns on this site.
If you've got the stomach for it, and I know it sounds gross, the best thing I can recommend is to feed half pinks split in half longitudinally. (Frozen / thawed, of course.) I usually crush the head first to make sure the skull is collapsed and not making sharp edges to irritate the stomach. It's messy, so feed in a deli cup and not on substrate. Longitudinal splitting makes the meal less wide so the irritated stomach doesn't have to stretch so much and it's easier for the digestive juices to get around the meal. Also, by opening the skin, you provide immediate access to the nutrients as the skin is a significant barrier that must be breached before digestion can begin and it slows down digestion. I prefer this to whole pinky heads as it stretches the stomach less and to mouse tails as it's more nutritious and easier to digest.
If the hatchling keeps half pinks down, I'd feed every 3 days as long as it's passing stool within a couple days. Once weekly is too long with a snake that is compromised and very young. With the split pinks, they should be able to digest them within 2 days if temps are sufficient and if their GI tract hasn't gotten to the point where it has shut down (which is a lost cause, anyway.) Be sure to check your temperatures closely and provide a nice gradient if possible so the hatchling can select its appropriate temperature (73 to 83 is a nice place to start). Minimize handling as much as possible until he/she is on more sure footing. If he/she keeps down 1/2 of a pink for 3 to 5 meals, you may try feeding both halves, still split. Once you see that the hatchling is starting to grow and has shed a couple times, move up to full (unsplit) pinks with the skin nipped along the back to still allow easy digestion, but with a bit larger meal.
Hey thanks for all the advise. I'm also a member of CS.com forum so I've been dabbling in there too. Ziggy only has 7 days left t his fast (14 days total) but I really like the idea of crushing the skull. (Wow what am I turning into, I don't even kill spiders) And I never feed on substrate, I don't want any impaction trouble. I'm also getting some NutriBac from KathyLove to help his little tummy.
Well keeping Ziggy and I in your thoughts would be much appreciated. I'm off to leave for a snowboarding trip! Woot!
I'm so jealous... I've always wanted to go to Italy. We're a generally well traveled family, so my little sister got to go, but Italy was one place I always missed out on due to work/school/relationships.
Welcome to the source Shorty. Ziggy is a real cutie and i wish you the best with him/her. I was always told one should wait 10 days after a regurge. Does that change after more then one regurge? Sorry i don't know but none of mine have never regurged thank heaven.
Some times it is a good idea to recheck temps with a digital with probe to make sure they have'nt flucuated for some reason. I have two digitals with probes in my tanks and i leave them in there 24/7 so i always know what the temps are. 75 on the cool end and 81 to 82 on the warm end.
I also enjoyed seeing Haley saying hello. Once again good luck...
Thanks for all the feed-back on my Ziggy. I just got home from my backcountry snowboarding trip with tons of pictures, stories, and a broken arm I checked on little Zig when I got home and he was responsive, still has muscle tone, and his tank was about 83-84. I recieved his NutriBac and am going to feed on Monday
Javen, of all the places to suggest to go on a vacation, Italy is a must! I really miss my nonno and nonna who still live back there so my plan for the third year at university is to go back to Palermo (my home) for the summer, then spend the fall semester in Firenze!
Welcome to The Source. It's great to have you here. Sorry to hear about your broken arm. Bummer to have that happen on your snowboarding trip. I'm from CA too. We haven't made it up to see the snow yet. I hope all goes well with your Ziggy!
