It's been said that "tragedies happen in threes", but man, I'm sick of reading the obits lately. First, Peter Boyle. Then, Joe Barbera.
And now, The Hardest Working Man In Show Business has died.
Yes, he's been parodied by many, most notably Eddie Murphy; his income tax troubles were on a par with Willie Nelson, and by some accounts, he abused the women in his life.
But above all else, James Brown was a showman. In that, he may have been head and shoulders above all else.
When Louis Armstrong died, bebop trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie paid tribute by simply saying, "No him......no me." I think Prince, Michael Jackson, and a few others may very well have to say the same thing regarding James Brown's influence on their work.
Thank you, James, for showing us Soul, for showing your soul, so that we may see ours.
