My girlfriend and I went to a "pet store"(I'll spare their name) the other day, we go there when we're around, she likes to play with their birds. When we were walking past their reptiles she saw some Garter snakes crawling around all skittish like they are and stopped to look at them. One was laying up on the log they had put in the case and it looked like it had a collapsed lung. I got someone to come over and open up the case so I could show them, when look at it, there appeared to be a scrape/cut along the first 3 inches of it's body. The lady told me they would take it in the back and put it in a seperate enclosure and monitor it. I though well I guess that's ok they'll take care of it. While there I figured why not check out the Corns. I had her open them, she wouldn't reach in and was reluctant to let me handle them because they were "mean and bite alot". None the less I reached into the container of 10 of them and none showed any aggression. I'm not to familiar with all the morphs but they were all the same except one, the smallest one was white with a little off white in the saddles. The others were all creamsicles, although again I'm not entirely sure. I pulled one out and was having a look at it and noticed that it had a kink in it about 3 inches from it's tail tip. I pulled out another one, same thing. I saw one and went to pick it up near it's head, only it wasn't it's head. When I picked it up it didn't move around much, it had retained fecal matter so large it was the same size as it's head. I don't mean length wise like it normally gets but it was all impacted at the vent. There was some dried fecal matter on its tail and a black line around it's vent. The snake was completely dehydrated, it's skin was loose and could be pinched. It didn't seem to have much feeling in it's mid to tail section as it didn't respond to touch, I suppose this could have been due to dehydration and fatigue. It too had a slight kink in it. I don't think any of the kinks were life threatening as they were very slight but I still showed them to the workers. Again the lady said that she would take it in the back and put it in it's own container and they would make a vet appointment for it. I told her that in it's condition it probably would make it to a vet appointment. She went and called her manager and asked if I could adopt it and try to save it. Her manager told her that she would have to send it to the vet first. She told her to explain it to me like this, "It's animals' first here". She then informed me that she had 4 other snakes already on the list for appointments prior to the two she was putting on because I showed her. I then told her that I thought it was funny that she told me it was animals' first when half their snakes are dying. I won't go into the details of the rest, let's just say they were all skinny and they had 1/10 water for 10 snakes than I have for one. And used a heat rock under a log for a hide. Needless to say I was more than a little upset that they would be willing to wait 4-5 days to get the animal check rather than letting me do something to help it immediately. I'm no vet but I seriously doubt that it will make it 4 more days without someone helping it defecate and get some water in it. They left me alone with all of them for like 10 minutes, had I known their intentions I would have just put it in my pocket and left with it.
