Very interesting baby! I have plans to pair my high white RO female with an ultamel male. It'll be interesting to see future pairings of this combination now that we know just HOW MUCH these animals vary.
Was there anything in this mix at all that could have masked amel?

Not that I'm aware of. Dad's an ultramel het anery, mom's a high white reverse okeetee. I used the ultramel on a number of females this year, including a snow. Didn't get anything else that messed with the black. Did get a couple of ultramel anerys with nice GRAY borders.
Hrm. Well it's a very interesting baby. It should be cool to see how it progresses.
Something I just noticed, you have wonderful backgrounds to take pictures of your corns on! Are they set up or are these areas of your yard? I am quite impressed!
Because Ultra and Amel are two different 'flavours' of the same gene, it's not possible to be homozygous for both at the same time. If you are homozygous for ultra, there's no 'room' for an amel allele; if you're homozygous for amel, it leaves no room for the ultra allele.
An ultramel carries one copy of each as a sort of mixed pair - which is why they look somewhat intermediate between an ultra and an amel.
Do you have any fresh pics? or a progression thread, i'd love to see how this little guy/girl is developing.
Here you go, taken today. She decided a while back that she only likes live and we have had a long-standing argument about that which so far I haven't completely won. So she's not as large as many of my other '07s. I still hope to have her breeding next year.
