I used Canon exclusively in the days of SLR and loved the product. Got a good deal on a Nikon Coolpix when I switched to digital and love it too. I'd personally go with one of these two manufacturers.
Really... My Dad just got a new Nikon SLR, so his Nikon Coolpix went in the closet, so I asked if I could have it, even tho my Canon is better, he let me have it... its the most akward thing I've ever used... maybe its because I'm so used to be Canon?

Nikon Coolpix 4500 Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review

It has the camera, extra telephoto lens, extra external flash thingy, according to my dad, he got it as consumer reports camera of the year of its time... BLEGH. Maybe I'd just need to take time to get to know it... but I'll take no such time, having a better camera than it (ya, I'm a snob) I will say tho... he did

buy fancy schmancy add ons...

When I had Film Cameras, I loved my Fuji Cameras... that's about all I have to say about that... I have no experience with their Digital Cameras... I gave you my opinion on Digital. I think you should go ahead and go for your first option and go with the Canon...

Having been a photographer back in the Pleistocene Era (pre-digital), I actually get annoyed with cameras that are too light; I feel the bulk gives me a more solid "anchor" for slower shutter speeds. I wept when I sold my Zone VI 4x5 field camera.

That said, my budget just ain't what is used to be, and I can't afford the DSLR that I've been jonesing for. I had a hand-me-down Digital Rebel XT for a very short while around Christmas/New Year's, but sold it about three months ago; and like all good comedy, I finally got a job just after I sold it.

So it was back to the 2.1 MPX Kodak point and shoot for me, until yesterday. I was fed up with the performance of it (my recent photos of Louise were a new low), and chose to get a PowerShot A630 at Wally World; 8 mpx, light enough to schlep everywhere, and enough "bulk" to feel like Canon's old "T" series film SLRs. My only complaints are the lack of image stabilization, and a zoom that only takes you to a 35mm film equivalent of around a 140mm focal length.

And hey, it was Wally World. It was under $200.

  1. It's mosquito season up here.
  2. I'm still on Coumadin to thin my blood.
  3. At my size, I exhale enough CO2 to attract the lil' buggers from where YOU live.
Conclusion: At this time of year, my legs look something like this.

But at my age, I'll take any objectification that I can.

You always have an excuse.
How's your blood these days, Dale?
You're doing well I hope.

I'm doing great; the only shortness of breath I get these days is not from blood clots but from my inability to kick cigarettes. I may be on Coumadin for life; that still has yet to be determined (I go in for a blood draw in about two weeks), and if not, I'll voluntarily do the low-dose aspirin thing, given my family history of strokes.

But back to photo gear. Have you come to a decision yet?

Dale

I'm glad to hear you're doing well.

I'm definitely going with a PowerShot A-somethingorother.
My problem now is I have to research the meanings of the features these cameras have because I'm completely camera illiterate.
I think I'm going with this one. I really want image stabilization, and with the memory card thrown in for free it'll be less then $10 over my budget.
