A couple weeks back or so I went with friends to a dog field trial for upland hunting dogs. They had labs but there were dogs of several different breeds present. I still feel that labs are the ultimate all around hunting dog. But the English Setters I got to see work were nice. German Shorthair Pointers still do nothing for me. Doubt that'll ever change! But hey, to each their own right? Trust me, I'm fighting to stay off that soap box about how dumb shorthair pointers are! But really it's just my opinion and every breed has their strong points. It just happens that german shorthairs have a negative aspect that is their strong point...Ok ok, I'll quit bashing them...
The trial was held in a big field and they kept going out after every pair of dogs ran and put out six bobwhite quail. Well...those birds sat TIGHT and it seemed most of the dogs couldn't find them! But I fear it was more of...we don't have bobwhite quail in North Dakota! So these dogs were probably all out there looking for pheasant! Oh well! Was interesting to watch. I enjoyed watching the setters take up point on birds. There was even a Boykin Spaniel that ran that I thought, what a fantastic little dog! Perfect in house size dog with a great nose and a happy as can be attitude!
Here are some pics I took. Enjoy!
