Here are a couple of pictures I took over the weekend that show my two favourite speckled pigeons. Luckily one is male and one is female, but they're not "married" to one another, I'll fix that as soon as my old rabbit hutch is not in use anymore.
Yes, pigeons have mates for life, or until something happens to one. The male sits on the nest during the day and cares for the chicks during the day, the female at night.
They can also never have a mate and instead be a harlot, they can carry on extra-marital affairs, and they can even be gay. Who knew so much was possible in the realm of the lowly pigeon.

Sadly since the latest hawk attack on Friday I'm only left with a handful of females, the males are all wooing like crazy and harassing any female they can. Right now I've got a single nest going with two eggs that should hatch out any day now, with any luck they'll be female. If not, I'll have to try to procure me some.
I bought a pair of Damascene pigeons off of Eggbid last week. They arrived today in the mail. Gorgeous birds, the picture doesn't do them justice. I hope they raise lots of babies to add to my flock and get some new blood in the mix.
I only got a picture of the male, as it was after dark and she was in the nest box, hopefully cooking up some eggs.
Lovely birds! Pigeons are great. I had a flock many years ago, mostly homing/racing pigeons. After I lost many to hawks, I donated the rest to a childrens petting zoo. I'd love to have pigeons again! But I think I'd resist the temptation to let them "free range" the next time.
Yeah, I've had my share of deaths of pigeons INSIDE the coop this year.
Last night I woke up around 4am to the pigeons and mandarin ducks going crazy in the pen. I got up and got the flashlight to shine out our bedroom window and I see a young coyote digging trying to get in the pen. He can dig to China if he wants, the pen is sitting on a concrete pad.
But by the time I got the window screen removed and the gun loaded, he ran off. I have a feeling he'll be back though.
