Well right on cue the post office called at 6am this morning to let us know a box of peeping joy was ready to be picked up.
My order comprises the following breeds:
1.3 Partridge Cochins
0.2 Black Cochins
0.0.4 Black Langshan
1.2 Dark Brahmas
0.4 Partridge Rocks
0.0.4 Silver Penciled Rocks
0.4 Cuckoo Marans (they lay a dark chocolate colored egg)
1.1 Brown Leghorns
0.0.1 Free Rare Breed Chick
Here's one of the Black Cochins or Black Langshans looking like a really fuzzy pajama suit:
And also on cue, even though its a full 2 days early, the eggs in my incubator have begun to hatch out. I'm hoping these are all Dark Cornish, nice meat birds. The reason I say I'm hoping is because I've never witnessed my Dark Cornish hens laying, but based on their smaller overall size compared to the other hens and the fact I get four of these smaller, light beige eggs a day and I have 4 Dark Cornish hens leads me to believe that these are their eggs. When the chicks hatch out, we'll find out if I was right.
very neat! Another project I'd enjoy if I lived in the country. But geez, I don't seem to hardly have time for what I've got much less a flock of chickens... But I've had some in my past and enjoyed them. I love the Partridge Rocks myself. Pretty birds as adults.
I'm a city girl and the only experience I have with chicks was on a kibbutz in Israel. I had the pleasure of working with the chicks for about a week. All I remember was how hot the chick house was and how loud hundreds of chicks can be! So I can honestly say that is one animal I would not be tempted to get!
Chickens are great, Right now I have a couple bantam hens sitting on a bunch of eggs. I have two bantam roosters, and 9 females, which include: 1 white cochin, 1 black cochin, 1 white frizzle cochin, 1 white silkie, and some others, that I have no idea what they are. I have another pen with young birds that includes:
0.8 aracuanas
0.1 white leghorn
0.2 brown leghorn
0.1 RI red
0.1 NH red
0.3 barred rocks
0.4 turkens
0.0.2 buff bramaha
0.0.2 light bramaha
0.0.1 dark bramaha
A pretty diverse group of animals, especially once they start laying. I need to take pictures sometimes, maybe someone can help me identify the other bantam hens.
