Barred Owl

I had to take the dog out for a potty break and decided to get some fresh air and went for a walk. I wandered around the yard taking pictures at 1am. Yeah, I'm a night-owl.

Anyway, as I was looking around the yard at all the pretty snow I saw something move out of the corner of my eye, and it was an owl that flew up in a tree limb.

I was a good distance away and slowly and quietly shuffled my way through the snow and managed to get a couple of pretty decent shots before I left it alone. My fingers were frozen solid from the bitterly cold wind anyway.

Its probably the same owl who I got on "film" last month after an overnight snow. I see this owl pretty frequently and hear it too, so its probably the one and the same. For an owl he's pretty undisturbed by humans and makes a good photographic study, almost as curious about me as I am about him (or her). During the summer there will be a group of 5-6 individuals all "hooting" up a storm around the yard, its almost comical.

Informational Sheet about Barred Owls, complete with audio clip of their calls.

I love those little burrowing owls....
I know it's wrong since they're rare and wild but I've wanted one since for EVER.
Such a pretty creature...

I think I saw one of those owls sitting on a power line on the side of a highway not too long ago. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what kind of owl it was...

Great pictures! I love barred owls. I really like their calls too. I would love to hear 6 at a time though!

Beautiful pictures!! Barred owls are my favorites!

When I was a kid in Ohio, I volunteered at a nature center where we had a barred owl with one eye. Last year I saw a barred owl with one eye at the natural history museum near where I used to work. I wondered if perhaps it was my old friend. But I'm afraid that the time span exceeds the life span for these owls by a couple of years - or perhaps he's setting a new record!

Gorgeous! There are definitely benefits to living in a difficult place for the FedEx guy to get to!

Thanks for the comments guys.

I do enjoy living out here in the sticks, for all of the minor inconveniences that come with it. But things are looking up, we finally got hooked up to DSL. Hopefully now our fickle "broadband" wireless can go the way of the dodo.

Wonderful shots.
He/she definately does look very curious about you - probably wondering what a human is doing wandering around at 100am with a camera!
