Royal Diadem ratsnakes

Spalerosophis diadema atriceps (also called Pakistan jeweled ratsnakes) - They are not actually ratsnakes, but a rear-fanged mildly venomous colubrid who ranges from Egypt, the Middle East, and even into India. They get around 4-5 feet long and are quite heavy bodied for a colubrid. As hatchlings they look like gopher or fox snakes, but adults range from a deep salmon orange color with random black splotches to nearly solid black with random orange specks. Care is that of most colubrids, 75-85F, low humidity.

Personality wise my new guys are hissers and jumpy, but have yet to strike.

I owned one of these for about 3 years. When I first got into corns, a guy at a show sold her as "practicly a corn snake"....yeah right, lol.

Meanest little thing I've ever been around animal wise. Each trip into the container for cleaning and watering was a minimum 2 bites. She got me in my lip once when I was holding her. <G>

They are really attractive, but not for the novice keeper !

Those are beauties. The head pattern alone is sweet.

When you say mildly venomous, do you mean just swelling and slight pain? something like the hog nose bites?

Not sure exactly, I havent found any documented cases of envenomated bites.

Paul..

The bites were very minor, much like a corn bite. I didn't have any swelling or reaction myself, other than the classic "mouth" shape of tiny red pin holes. <G>

Thanks Gronk. Was wondering about that. I got bit on my pinky finger by my western hog nose and had my hand swell up a bit, and a bit of pain, but didn't hurt much. was wondering if this was similar.

With them being rear fanged, it is hard for people to actually get envenomated unless they get you in just the right place.

Again, those pictures are awesome
